Description

Lactic Acid: Lactic acid salts, most notably sodium lactate, have been hypothesized to be part of skin's own natural moisturizing system. In vitro data suggests that AHAs especially lactic and ascorbic can affect skin pigmentation. Several publications suggest lactic acid inhibits tyrosinase activity and a number of uncontrolled or in vitro studies demonstrate or suggest whitening effects of ascorbic acid derivatives. Pigmentation is an epidermal phenomenon, in part due to melanin in the melanocytes, however to a greater extent melanin is deposited intro epithelial cells via adendritic interaction. Since AHA treatment should facilitate the removal of epithelial cells via increased exfoliation it seems plausible that a whitening effect could be observed.

Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is a topical keratolytic agent. It is used to remove excess keratin in hyperkeratotic skin disorders such as common and plantar warts, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, calluses, and corns. Salicylic acid also is used to treat acne. Salicylic acid works by causing desquamation of the horny layer of skin. Prolonged or repeated daily use over large areas of skin may result in salicylism, especially in children and patients with renal or hepatic impairment. This drug was approved by the FDA in 1939.
